The Inaugural McPherson Cup Matches
Colorado, Southwest and Sun Country PGA Sections form Triangular Ryder Cup Style event

September 17, 2018 – The Colorado, Southwest and Sun Country PGA Sections are pleased to announce the formation of the McPherson Cup Matches. The biennial event will be in a Ryder Cup style format with the three Sections competing over two days, playing 54 holes of golf.

Named in honor of Ron McPherson, the CEO of The Antigua Group and long-time supporter of all three Sections and the PGA of America, the inaugural event is scheduled to take place Sept. 26-27 at The Glacier Club in Durango, Colo.

“The Southwest PGA is extremely excited to join the Colorado and Sun Country PGA Sections in this triangular match competition,” said Michael Miller, executive director of the Southwest PGA. “The opportunity for members of each of our Sections to come together in a competition that promotes the spirit of the game within our Association is outstanding. To be able to honor Ron McPherson, who has generously supported all three Sections for numerous years, makes this event very meaningful.”

Teams from each Section will be made up of 12 Class A PGA Professionals – eight, ages 49 and younger and four, 50 and over. The event gets underway on Wed., Sept. 26 with fourball matches in the morning and foursome (alternate shot) matches in the afternoon. On Thur., Sept. 27, the three-ball, singles matches will be played in the morning followed by the awards ceremony.

“The Colorado PGA is extremely excited to join our fellow PGA Professionals from the Southwest and Sun Country Sections in the 2018 McPherson Cup,” said Eddie Ainsworth, executive director of the Colorado PGA. “Matches like these emphasize the comradery of PGA Professionals across the country and The Glacier Club is going to prove to be an exceptional location to host this event.”

A total of 24 points will be available for each Section to earn. Six points are available in each session of the opening day and 12 points in the second day’s singles matches. The Section with the most points at the end of competition will be declared the winner.

“Helping to build a bridge between the PGA members throughout the southwest, via what they do best, is a great way to honor our Association, our Sections and our membership,” said Sun Country PGA executive director, Dana Lehner. “Our members are experts in the business and game of golf and the opportunity to compete and show off their professional playing ability with our next-door neighbor PGA members is a privilege and should be a lot of fun.”

McPherson and Antigua continue to support numerous golf organizations nationwide including many junior programs. For over 30 years they have been the title sponsor of the Southwest PGA’s Antigua Junior Prep Tour. Among his many honors, McPherson was inducted into the Southwest PGA Hall of Fame in 2017 for his numerous contributions to the Section and the game of golf.
